The technology in the high-end Dainese airbag suits worn by the likes of Valentino Rossi is being rolled out across a road-orientated range, dubbed D-Air Street.
And while the range will be launched in Europe in the second quarter of 2012, local Dainese importer Cassons says they are no immediate plans to import any part of the range to Australia.
According to Cassons, “The jacket would retail between $2000-$3000 and on top of that special systems have to be fitted to the motorcycle. And those systems would have to be fitted by authorised dealers of the Dainese product, it is just not practical for Australia at this stage.”
The motorcycle kit consists of three sensors – one fitted under the seat of the motorcycle, one on the fork and a fall sensor that is attached electronically to the dash – which talk to the two inbuilt 12-litre airbags capable of deploying in 45 milliseconds.
The airbags are placed to protect the rider’s spine, upper torso, chest and to limit neck movement.
A rider can also program the system to include a pillion passenger – assuming they’re wearing a D-Air Street garment – via the instrument panel.
