Australian racer Damian Cudlin is set to make a return to MotoGP this weekend, with the 30-year-old to take to the grid at Aragon, Spain, as a replacement for Yonny Hernandez at Paul Bird Motorsport. Hernandez was earlier released from his contract at PBM so he could join Pramac Ducati.
Cudlin will now ride PBM’s Rapid Solicitors/Minxflix bike at Aragon and at Phillip Island in three weeks’ time. After winning the 2010 IDM German Supersport Championship Cudlin made his MotoGP debut at the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix, and more recently raced in Moto2 at Assen and Sachsenring in 2012.
In other PBM news, racer Michael Laverty will switch to the Aprilia ART bike for the remainder of the season.
According to Phil Borley, PBM’s Technical Director, the team is hoping to put Cudlin’s extensive experience to good use.
“PBM is looking forward to working with Damian at the Aragon and Phillip Island GPs, where he will race the PBM bikes,” he said.
“With his experience and knowledge we hope to continue the development of our bike and have a positive weekend together. Unfortunately we will not have the chance to test before the race and so the first sessions will be important for Damian to acclimatise to the bike, the Bridgestone tyres and the carbon brakes. Our target will be to improve Damian’s feeling in each session and give him a bike he is confident to race.
“Michael will switch to the ART bikes from the next race, as his feeling was positive when he tested them after the Misano race and we are interested to see if we can improve on our recent results,” he added.
Cudlin's signing is good news for spectators planning on heading to the 2013 Tissot Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix (October 18-20), who will be cheering him on in the premiere class alongside Go&Fun Honda Gresini's Byran Staring.
