It must go down as one of the shortest contract extensions on record. On July 21 we announced that Briton Cal Crutchlow would remain a Ducati factory rider in 2015, but less than two weeks later the decision has been reversed.
In a matter-of-fact media release issued by Ducati Corse on August 2 – far removed from the gushing announcement on July 21 – it said the following:
“Ducati Corse announced today that it has reached an agreement with its factory rider Cal Crutchlow to terminate, ahead of time, the contract that ties the British rider to the Italian team in MotoGP for the next season.”
But earlier there appeared to have been some confusion, with Ducati Corse sending out a similar release which also said that it was going to “terminate, ahead of time, the contract that ties the British rider to the Italian team in MotoGP for 2014 and also for next season”. The subsequent release removed the reference to 2014, so based on that we expect the Briton to see out the season with Ducati before going elsewhere in 2015.
But where to for Crutchlow? Seats are filling fast -- the factory seats are all but gone -- and we’d expect to have all contracts locked in over the next few weeks – which also should tell us whether Aussie Jack Miller is heading to MotoGP in 2015 after all.
The two factory Ducati riders for 2015 will now be Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone.
