Veteran Tomasz Gollob has won the Scandinavian speedway GP at a wet Malilla, edging out Australian Jason Crump in the final.
But the event was still a windfall for Crump, who increased his lead in the word championship to 35pts after the pedestrian performances of Emil Sayfutdinov and Greg Hancock, who both failed to make semi-final action.
The duo were previously behind Crump in the championship, but now Gollob has leapfrogged over both of them to move into second on 91pts, ahead of Hancock (87), Sayfutdinov (82), Andreas Jonsson (67), Kenneth Bjerre (63), Hans Andersen (61), world champion Nicki Pedersen (59) and Australian Leigh Adams (47).
Crump is on 126pts, with four rounds remaining.
“Winning world championships is all about consistency and my focus has been on getting to each final,” said Crump.
“At this stage, all is going to plan and I hope that I maintain that consistency. The championship is still far from over, so I am not putting claim to anything at this point.
"I just need to avoid injury, keep my bikes running and stay focused on the job ahead of me. I will be giving it my best right to the end.”
There were three Swedish riders in the semi-finals at Malilla, but not one of them managed to progress to the final.
Fredrik Lindgren and Jonsson were out in the opening semi, won by Gollob from Bjerre, while Antonio Lindback was third in the second semi won by Crump from Hans Andersen.
Gollob was brilliant in the final, with Lindgren and Jonsson following Crump home in third and fourth.
