Crump and Hancock 2-3 in Denmark

The Aussies have both made a world speedway final as a double act for the first time this year, finishing second and third respectively in round five

Polish rider Tomasz Gollob has won the Danish Speedway Grand Prix in Copenhagen, ahead of Australians Jason Crump and Chris Holder. Crump rocketed around his compatriot on the last bend to secure second, with American Greg Hancock fourth.

Gollob now has 61 world championship points, while Hancock is breathing down his neck on 60. Polish international Jaroslaw Hampel is their nearest rival on 48, with Crump and Holder both on 45.

“Greggy, Holder and Crumpy were all there in the first corner and it was very tight,” said Gollob. “My start was perfect from the second gate. I went around the outside. It wasn’t the best way for me.

“There was only two metres between the riders and the fence, but I got there.”

Crump was desperate to win the GP for Leigh Adams, after the former speedway star was badly injured in a dirt bike crash last week.

“I almost did it so I’m pretty happy with that,” said Crump. “It’s a hard time for them and I want them to know just how much support they have. Leigh was a big part of the world championship for a lot of years and an extremely well respected rider among his peers. That race in the final was for him.

“I’ve been struggling with my equipment this year and the points I dropped after being injured in Gothenburg GP have put me in the back seat points’ wise. We made some serious changes for this weekend and I’m pleased I’ve been able to build on the previous GP result. Now I need to focus on consistency and keeping things working.”

The next stopover in the championship is the showpiece round at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on June 25, where Holder won his first GP in 2010, and where Crump has also enjoyed past success.
