Polaris Racing RZR pilot Cody Crocker (pictured, #91) has taken out the inaugural SxS Rally Challenge, which is being held over four rounds this year in conjunction with the Bosch 2012 Australian Rally Championship.
The SxS Rally Challenge was the brainchild of Side-by-Side vehicle (SxS) specialists Polaris and Can-Am, and sees the former's RZR model pitted against the latter's Commander model. Other than highlighting the two brands and models, the series also serves as a low-cost entry point to rally driving, requiring a relatively minimal outlay and minimal on-going expenses.
Round three of the SxS Challenge was recently held in conjuction with the ARC's International Rally of Queensland over May 26-27, and while a puncture saw Crocker and his navigator, Greg Foletta, lose over four minutes in a stage on Day Two, the pair still triumphed in 12 of the weekend's 13 legs, the points delivering an unassailable championship lead.
Crocker now sits on top of the leaderboard with 219pts, ahead of Can-Am's Michael Guest on 137. The remainder of the top five slots are filled by Polaris entries.
The Queensland round also saw a somewhat higher-profile driver taking to the wheel of a Polaris RZR, with Stone Brothers Racing V8 Supercars steerer Tim Slade (pictured, #98) taking time out from his busy V8 schedule for some SxS Challenge action. He didn't mess around, either, actually tieing for first on Day Two.
Slade said he was thrilled by the experience. "What a blast!" he said. "The grip and the acceleration in the dirt was awesome -- I want one! It's great to see a class where you can win an elite national title in a vehicle worth around $29,000. We only used $200 in parts and fuel for the weekend!" he added.
Round four of the SxS Challenge will be held in conjunction with the ARC's Coffs Coast Forest Rally, October 13-14, at Coffs Harbour, NSW. For more information visit http://rally.com.au
