Country paper leads with ATV imbroglio
The debate about the use of rollover protection devices on ATVs continues, with the nation's rural bible again putting the issue under the microscopeHas the issue of rollover protection devices on ATVs reached a flashpoint?
That was after the nation’s leading rural publication, The Weekly Times, ran a front page story on November 23 revealing that a Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI)-sponsored website against the fitment of rollover protection (ROP) on ATVs had been closed down.
The website, a key pillar of the FCAI’s campaign, had warned ATV buyers that safety add-ons such as roll bars “can cause injury and death”.
And in another story last month, The Weekly Times reported that “the US research the (FCAI) campaign was based upon was flawed”.
The motorcycle boss at the FCAI, Mr Rhys Griffiths, while refusing to delve into specifics of The Weekly Times story, told the Bikesales Network that he has an “issue with the way that the message (on ROP) is being articulated”.
“The issue of rollover protection is a very complex one, and it’s important that as an industry we hold and substantiate a strong position,” said Griffiths. “And the FCAI’s not only facing pressure from manufacturers to resolve this issue, but the ACCC also wants to see us get the message across.
“I have made a commitment to manufacturers that we are going to make a statement on our position by Wednesday (November 30).”
