After claiming the 2012 Australian MX Nationals title, New Zealand racer Josh Coppins (pictured, on his way to winning the Aussie championship) will be rejoining his old Monster Energy Yamaha team to contest the final two rounds of the FIM World Motocross Championship, before hanging up his boots and retiring after the Motocross of Nations (to be held in Belgium, September 30).
Coppins contested the MXGP of Europe, held at Faenza, Italy, last weekend, where he recorded a 12-8 result in MX1 to finish 12 overall for the round. He will also face the starter at the final round of the world title at Teutschenthal, Germany, on September 23, and then the 66th Motocross of Nations, before ruling a line under his stellar career and bowing out from professional competition.
The 35-year-old rider is competing aboard a Yamaha YZ450F, and is working alongside several team members with whom he staged World Motocross Championship campaigns in 2007 to 2009. He is partnering Scotland's Shaun Simpson for the last two rounds.
“After winning in Australia it was great to have the opportunity to properly close the book by coming back to one of the most professional teams I’ve worked with in Grand Prix racing,” said Coppins.
“Obviously I’m used to the Yamaha and I posted good results with the bike this season, but it will be fantastic to get on the factory bike in Monster Energy colours and tackle these events again with Michele, Fabio, Mino and the guys. There are no expectations -- I just want to go out and show there is still gas in the tank and give a good account of myself and the team. It will be good preparation for the Nations in Belgium and overall a nice way to finish a long career,” he added.
