Compulsory ABS in Europe by 2015?

Plenty of lobbying going on behind the scenes to introduce the anti-lock legislation two years ahead of the original 2017 date
The Fédération internationale de l’automobile (FIA) is continuing its lobbying of Members of the European Parliament in an effort to convince them to support the mandatory introduction of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) for motorcycles from 2015.
According to the FIA, introducing the measure in 2015 rather than 2017 could save more than 1000 lives in Europe.
It argues that the date of 2017 cannot be justified either technically or in terms of costs.
The association maintains that the cost would be negligible compared with the overall cost of a motorcycle, and that the mandatory introduction of ABS will not influence consumer choices in any case.
“As clearly demonstrated in the car sector, competition increases and prices are driven down once a technology becomes mandatory,” said the FIA in a statement.
According to European statistics, motorcyclists make up around two percent of road users but account for 17 percent of road fatalities.
