A KTM whitewash -- or perhaps 'orangewash' -- of the recent Sardinia Rally has seen the Austrian marque fill the podium and claim the 2012 World Cross Country Rally Championship crown.
Spanish off-road ace and Dakar winner Marc Coma (pictured) claimed the bottom step of the podium in Sardinia after fellow KTM riders Jordi Viladoms (Spain) and Alessandro Botturi (Italy) filled first and second respectively, but in doing so Coma accrued enough championship points to form an unassailable lead in the title chase. The results has rendered the last of the four-round series a mere formality.
Held over June 24 to 28, the Sardinia Rally was held later in the year than usual, and competitors struggled with searing temperatures. The event's marathon stage was scrapped, due to the threat of forest fires.
The final round, to be held in Egypt, kicks off on September 30.
