When most people set out for an enjoyable day on a lake, they take a boat. But not Luca Colombo – he takes his motocross bike!
On Saturday, July 6, the Italian will attempt to knock off the world motorcycle water speed record previously set by Australia's Robbie Maddison, when he takes to the picturesque waters of Lake Como in northern Italy aboard a carefully prepared Honda CRF450R.

Meticulously set up by Milan-based Honda off-road specialist, RedMoto, Colombo's bike features skis and a rear paddle tyre, giving him both the propulsion and the speed he hopes will see him break Maddison's on-water record of 93.3km/h.
It's not Colombo's first attempt at these water-borne bike antics – he crossed Lake Como from shore to shore on a Suzuki on July 30, 2017, completing 5.5km from Gravedona to Colico at around 75km/h, at one point reaching a maximum of 83km/h. Check out some footage of that epic run below...
He'll be attempting his latest record speed run over a 1.9km course and from the moment he's on the water he'll have to maintain a minimum of 50km/h – any slower and the bike will sink.
Conditions on the day will play a huge role, and Colombo says the bike is fitted with an emergency self-inflating flotation system he can activate if the attempt turns pear-shaped.
Personally, we'd opt for a boat – but where's the challenge in that?!?
More to come...
