COLOGNE SHOW: 2011 Triumph Speed Triple

Lighter, more powerful, and just a little bit angrier, the new Speed Triple will be a force to be reckoned with

Triumph's 2011 Speed Triple heralds a new styling direction for the brand, while improving performance and dynamics via a number of modifications, and will on sale in Australia in February 2011.

The engine remains a 1050cc triple, albeit with more power, and the much cleaner and more menacing look should please its legion of fans around the globe. The more swagger the better we reckon.

The bug-eyed lights, so long the staple of the Speed Triple, have also changed shape and, in concert with the colour-coded accessory flyscreen, now don't stick out like the proverbials.

Building on the popular naked bike's solid reputation as a high performance litre-class streetfighter, the new model's edgy new headlight design will no doubt define the next generation of Triumph naked bikes - and possibly other bikes across the range. Elements of this new headlight style will also be seen in the upcoming Triumph Tiger.

There’s also an all-new lighter and stiffer aluminium chassis, so the barebones brawler should have no problems doing justice to the increased performance.

We're yet to receive official details on the Speed Triple's key indicators (power and weight), but we're hearing 135hp (96kW) at 9400rpm, 111Nm at 7750rpm, and 214kg wet weight. That's compared to 130hp (99kW), 103Nm and 217kg wet weight for the outgoing model.

Certainly not a quantum leap, but we'll reserve the ultimate judgement until it's been ridden.

ABS is optional, and there is an updated 43mm fully adjustable upside-down fork.

The three colour options are white, black or red. Other accessories include seat cowl and belly pan are available amongst many other genuine Triumph accessories.

The Speed Triple will go on sale in Australia in February 2011.
