Coldenhoff gives GasGas first MXGP win in Latvia

An MXGP win for Glenn Coldenhoff and GasGas ended a history-making day for the KTM Group

While rookie Brad Binder was winning KTM’s first MotoGP race in the Czech Republic, Glenn Coldenhoff won the MXGP round at Kegums in Latvia to give GasGas its first win in the motocross world championship series.

Dutch star Coldenhoff finished the day with a 2-1 scorecard, edging out Tim Gajser (Honda) and Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) for the win.

The GasGas rider battled Gajser in the opening moto, taking the lead on the second lap. Gajser hit back and ultimately won the first race, with Coldenhoff settling for second. Fvebre finished third, while KTM’s Dutch superstar, Jeffrey Herlings, finished fourth.

Coldenhoff had better luck in the second moto, but only at the expense of Gajser, who crashed while challenging for the lead. This allowed the GasGas rider to take the win, but he had fight off Yamaha rider Jeremy Seewer, who finished second.

Tim Gajser crashed in the second moto, but still had a strong weekend

With Gajser ultimately finishing the second moto in 5th, Coldenhoff was awarded overall win; his fourth career Grand Prix victory.

The win was a first for GasGas, a brand now owned by KTM. GasGas was born in 1985 as a manufacturer of trials, and later enduro, motorcycles. The 2020 MXGP season is its first attempt at breaking into the world of motocross.

With three rounds completed, Herlings leads the championship, despite missing the podium in both races. The KTM rider leads Gajser by a small margin, with Coldenhoff in third.

Herlings had a sub-par day but still leads the title race

Nine-time world champion Toni Cairoli (KTM) had a day to forget, with a 7-17 result leaving him 13th overall. Australian Mitch Evans (Honda) also had a tough day, finishing 19th overall.

Tom Vialle won the GP and leads the MX2 title race

In MX2, KTM’s French sensation, Tom Vialle, went 1-2 for the day to win the grand prix, with Dutch Kawasaki rider, Roan Van De Moosdijk, finishing second. Australia’s Jed Beaton (Husqvarna) managed a third in moto two, finishing 9th overall. Compatriots Nathan Crawford (Honda) and Bailey Malkiewicz (Honda) finished 12th and 27th respectively.

The COVID-19 affected series returns to Kegums on August 12th, and again on August 16th. The opening two rounds at Matterley Basin and Valkenswaard were completed before the pandemic forced the suspension of the championship.
