The 2012 running of the Australasian Safari sees the event venture into new territory -- both literally and metaphorically -- as over 100 competitors in 4WDs and buggies, and on dirt bikes and quads, tackle a technical new course that traces its way up the stunning coastline of Western Australia.
Historically an inland affair, the course itself is shorter this year -- closer to 3000km than last year's 4000km epic -- but event organisers promise it has lost none of its challenge, with sandy creeks, river crossings, vegetated sand dunes and stunning natural landscapes replacing the dust, paddocks and fence lines of previous Safaris.
Held over September 21-29, 2012, the ceremonial start for this year's event will be held in Perth, before the competition stages kick off in Geraldton. From there the course takes in places such as Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Carnarvon, the Kennedy Ranges (pictured) and Gascoyne Junction, before returning to Geraldton on Saturday, September 29.
According to organisers, the course will test competitors to the very limit. "While a shorter course this year, competitors will be forced to race at a lower average competition speed due to the technically challenging and rough terrain," a recent press release states. "The course will be complex for riders and drivers, making the Australasian Safari worthy of its title of 'the toughest off-road challenge in Australia'," it continues.
And, as an added incentive for competitors in the Moto class, the highest-placed finisher who has signed up for the Australasian Safari's 'Dakar Challenge' will win free entry to Dakar 2013!
