Chris Holder is only two rounds away from joining an illustrious group of Australians to have won the Speedway World Championship.
The New South Welshman again collected a big haul of points at the latest round in Sweden on September 8, and is now 8pts in front of defending world champion Greg Hancock.
“There was a lot of pressure on in Sweden, especially coming off the win at Cardiff,” said Holder.
“I’m really satisfied with how everything went. It was a slow start for me and I wasn’t the quickest guy by any means. But when it came to the crunch, I got the bike set up really well and made the most of the last race to get me into the semi.”
Holder then made it into the final, where he finished second behind Polish veteran Tomasz Gollob and ahead of Antonio Lindback.
Australia’s second rider, Jason Crump, bowed out in Sweden in the same semi won by Holder. Crump has slipped to fifth in the standings on 111pts behind Holder (134), Hancock (126), Nicki Pedersen (124) and Gollob (114)
The penultimate round will be held in Denmark on September 22.
Four Australians have won the world speedway title: Lionel van Praag (1936), Bluey Wilkinson (1938), Jack Young (1951-1952) and Crump (2004/2006/2009). Praag’s win came in the inaugural year of competition.
