China's 'motorcycle graveyard'

Thousands of bikes literally left under a bridge after a crackdown by local authorities

When you talk about 'critical mass' China just about leads the way in every index — including powered two-wheeler graveyards it seems.

This image comes from Nantou Bridge in Shenzhen, China, where thousands of motorcycles have been abandoned following a recent police crackdown on illegally operated bikes, which apparently is a significant issue in the area.

According a report on dailmail.co.uk, nearly 18,000 vehicles have been seized by authorities in 11 days, with police officers said to be rewarded for each illegal bike. This tangled mess, which incudes motorcycles, sedans and electric bikes piled on top of each other, is the end result.

Shenzhen has been tightening laws to combat illegally operated or unregistered sidecars on motorcycles, and now motorised tricyles — a very popular  mode of transport in China — are now being swept up in the clampdown.

Eight years ago, police in the Yangdong district of the city demolished 14,277 motorcycles as part of a crackdown.
