Checa defeats Stoner

But not on the race track – in the hearts and minds of the public to win the FIM Personality of the Year Award
Spain’s first Superbike world champion, Carlos Checa, has received the award for Personality of the Year at a gala ceremony in Portugal on December 4.
Checa defeated Australia’s Casey Stoner in the public voting award, designed exclusively for those who won world championships in 2011. Other riders in the running included Antonio Cairoli (motocross), Ryan Villopoto (supercross), Toni Bou (moto trials), Juha Salminen (enduro), Mike Ahola (enduro) and Greg Hancock (speedway).
Other winners at the ceremony included:
  • Maciej Janowski (FIM speedway Under 21 world champion) -- FIM Rookie of the Year;
  • Laia Sanz (FIM women's trial world champion) -- FIM Woman of the Year; and
  • Motorcycling Australia -- FIM Environmental Award.

Legends such as Angel Nieto, Carl Fogarty, Eric Geboers, Yjro Vesterinen, Giovanni Sala, Tony Rickardsson and Iris Kramer were joined on stage by the likes of Checa, Stefan Bradl, Cairoli, Bou, Salminen, Hancock, Stephanie Laier, Ludivine Puy, and Sanz as winners of their respective FIM world championships.
