Will Chad Reed’s massive bingle (see below) in last weekend’s round of the 2011 American Motocross Championship eventually make its way into the annals of great sporting mishaps, alongside such classic stuff-ups as this one?
We think so. But the story doesn’t end there, as Reed dusted himself off, jumped back on his Honda and battled back through the pack from dead last to finish 14th. Earlier, he won the opening moto.
“I hit some bumps and the front wheel just went out from under me,” Reed explained. “The next thing I knew, I was flying through the air. I’m just happy to still be here."
And he contined to debrief on Twitter: "I certainly learnt I can't fly I tried it today! What goes up must come down....Glad to be ok after that one big thanks to all the fans u kept me going today."
After his crash, and when he realised he had escaped serious injury, there was no choice but to continue.
“It’s all about the championship so I wasn’t about to lie down and let these guys gain 25pts. I got back on and rode my best to come back from dead last to 14th.
“It was always going to be a fight, and now it’s definitely going to be that way but I’m excited for the rest of the races.”
Reed leads Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto by 6pts and Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey by seven with five rounds still remaining. Another Australian, Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki), is fourth.
