Chad Reed accepts new world supercross role

The Australian legend is moving into the next phase of his career

Former AMA Supercross champion Chad Reed is set to take on a new challenge, with the Australian-born legend joining the WSX team as a motorsport advisor and commentator.

Reed came out of retirement in 2022 to race in the inaugural WSX Championship, but was injured in the opening race. He will now direct his efforts to providing strategic advice on all sporting aspects of the WSX series, as well as playing an integral role in the broadcast team.

Originally hailing from New South Wales, Reed travelled overseas as an 18-year-old to compete in Europe and then America. He quickly became one of the best riders in the world, winning four AMA Supercross titles throughout his career.

He also tried his hand as a promoter for the Australian-based Super X series, and as a team owner with TwoTwo Motorsports, before retiring in 2020.

“Supercross has had a piece of my heart since I was 12-years-old,” said Reed. “I can now use my understanding of the sport and my experience as an athlete, series promoter, and team owner to assist SX Global in making the best decisions to sustainably grow supercross around the world.”

The WSX Championship gained the official rights to the FIM World Championship after AMA Supercross promoters gave up the honour in 2021. With the goal of establishing a true “world” supercross championship, WSX has evolved from two races in its inaugural year to six in 2023.

WSX is organised by Australian company SX Global, which was born from AME Management, the current organisers of the Australian Supercross Championship. Reed has a history with AME Management, having played an important on-track role in the popular AUS-X Open events.

While Reed’s exact role in the broadcast team is unclear, he will likely work closely with the current WSX line-up including Ralph Sheheen, Jeff Emig, and Kristen Beat.

The 2023 WSX Championship kicks off on July 1 with the British GP in Birmingham. The series will also visit France, Singapore, Germany and Canada, before finishing at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on November 24-25. Ken Roczen is the reigning WSX450 World Champion.
