CFMOTO 800MT sprung!

We've spotted a pre-production example of the Chinese brand's new adventure bike in rural Victoria, and it looks the business…

It appears the 2021 CFMOTO 800MT is looming ever closer to Australian showrooms, after a pre-production version of the bike was spotted while parked outside a rural Victorian pub recently near the regional centre of Castlemaine.

This pre-production example of the CFMOTO 800MT Sport has been racking up some miles through country Victoria, ahead of an official launch by the end of 2021

After word of the CFMOTO 800MT first emerged in 2020, the bike was officially unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in last April, and was displayed once again at recent 2021 Beijing Motorcycle Show, alongside the brand’s 1250TR-G grand tourer.

While CFMOTO Australia is yet to release pricing for the much-anticipated adventure bike, it has said it will go on sale here in two variants – the CFMOTO 800MT Sport and CFMOTO 800MT Touring – by the end of 2021.

It's a tidy looking machine with an impressive build quality

It was the CFMOTO 800MT Sport that bikesales spied in rural Victoria, and a closer inspection of the bike revealed an impressive build quality and no shortage of features. The list includes Bosch electronic fuel injection, TFT instrumentation, a choice of ride modes (Sport, Street and Rain), LED lighting (including an LED daytime running light and auxiliary driving lights) and manually adjustable suspension.

There’s a manually adjustable screen too, along with USB and 12-volt power sockets, plus sturdy pillion grabrails, a rear carrier (for fitting an accessory topbox), and engine crash bars.

The bike has a twin-disc, four-piston, radial-mount front brake set-up from Spanish component supplier J.Juan, matched to a twin-piston caliper at the rear.

The CFMOTO 800MT Sport also has cast alloy wheels shod with fairly conservative Maxxis MaxxVenture road-oriented tyres, a 110/80R19 up front and a 150/70R17 at the rear.

However , its sibling, the CFMOTO 800MT Touring, will feature wire-spoked wheels, while also benefitting from a number of additional features spanning tyre pressure monitoring, a bi-directional quickshifter, handguards, an alloy bashplate, a steering damper, and keyless starting.

Onwards and upwards

Even with CFMOTO’s full-power 700CL-X Classic arriving here in July (followed by Adventure and Sport variants), these CFMOTO 800MT models will be the largest-capacity bikes from the Chinese company to come our way yet, with the models powered by a 799cc parallel-twin engine borrowed from KTM’s 790 platform.

Looks like hard cases will be part of the accessories catalogue for the new models

The two companies formed a collaboration back in 2013, giving KTM exposure to the massive Chinese market while bringing further technical expertise to CFMOTO.

While KTM recently shifted from its 790 platform to an 890 platform, these CFMOTO 800MT models still pack a punch. Producing a claimed 95hp (70kW) at 8000rpm and 88Nm at 6600rpm in a package weighing in at 225kg wet, these bikes will be a significant step up from CFMOTO’s existing 650 range of naked, sportstourer and adventure models.

CFMOTO has a strong partnership with KTM that brings synergies that benefit both brands. CFMOTO’s road bikes have been styled by Kiska Design for a number of years now – the design house behind the look of KTM motorcycles for decades. The Austrian-based firm these days also has an office in Shanghai, China.

Like the CFMOTO 700CL-X range, the CFMOTO 800MT family will fall outside of the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme, broadening the brand’s range here appreciably.
