Yamaha’s factory Aussie motocross squad, CDR Yamaha, has announced its rider line-up for the 2013 season – and it’s pinning its hopes on Lawson Bopping and Billy Mackenzie to pilot the team’s YZ450Fs to a fifth consecutive MX Nationals title.
Bopping is entering his second year with the Craig Dack Racing outfit while Mackenzie, a former GP racer, has stepped up to replace Josh Coppins, the outgoing champ, who retired at the end of 2012.
Craig Dack said he’s had his eye on Mackenzie for some time and that the time was right for the Scot to bring his considerable talents to CDR Yamaha. “I have watched Billy a lot over the past few seasons and his speed has always been impressive,” he said. “I felt there were a couple of areas he needed to address and we have spoken about them. Now that he’s settled in Australia and comfortable racing here, combined with his new attitude and CDR’s on-going desire to stay out in front, I’m confident Billy will be a major contender in 2013,” he added.
Mackenzie said he was very much looking forward to racing for CDR Yamaha. “The first time I sat on the team bike it just felt right,” said Mackenzie. “The team has great staff and enormous knowledge of the bikes and the years spent developing them is obvious. CDR Yamaha is the most professional team in the pits and I’m humbled that Craig has selected me – this is my chance to make this year the best year of my career,” he added.
Meanwhile Bopping, who finished in the top five on both the motocross and supercross titles in 2012, is looking to maintain and build on his momentum. “Last year was great; it was a huge learning curve for me to be on a team like CDR,” he said. “I now know what is expected and how things work within the team and also I’m totally familiar with the YZ450F, so with a good pre-season behind me, I expect my results to improve in 2013,” he added.
Mackenzie will be travelling between Australia and New Zealand this year, as he will also be contesting the latter’s MX1 titles for JCR Yamaha.
