When MotoGP champion Casey Stoner beat Felipe Massa in an ice-race - on four wheels - back in 2009 at Ducati/Ferrari Vrooom event, something twigged in his brain - possibly the pleasure receptors?
Casey Stoner since completed 90 laps in Craig Lowndes Holden V8 Supercar, and recently tweeted a photo of his custom go-kart, hinting at a growing interest in four wheeled motor racing.
Stoner's custom go-kart is a pretty mean looking machine, a hobby the dual MotoGP world champion takes pretty seriously as a training adjunct. He's been working on the kart during his spare time between Qatar and Jerez, and regularly takes it out to improve his reflexes and endurance (and no doubt because it's fun).
Stoner has admitted that four-wheeled motor racing appeals to him and wants to compete in more kart races in the future, and his star power certainly wouldn't be passed over by any V8 Supercar teams when Stoner decides to retire from MotoGP.
"It’s something I have wanted to do since I was quite young actually," said Stoner when he tested the TeamVodafone Holden Commodore late in 2011.
"The opportunity to finally get in one and have a go is something pretty special to me,” added Stoner.
As Australia's second richest sports person, behind Basketballer Andrew Bogut and ahead of F1 driver Mark Webber, Stoner certainly isn’t lacking the funds to invest in other forms of racing, but don't expect him to defect to touring cars any time soon.
