How trick is this Roland Sands KTM 450 SX-F customisation project? It was put together by Sands, one of America's custom giants, together with KTM and Red Bull as an auction item for the Kurt Caselli Foundation, set up after Caselli passed away in November 2013 while competing in the Baja 1000 in Mexico.
The goal of the customisation project was simple: take a modern day 450 motocrosser and make it look like a throwback to the bikes that kicked around in the original On Any Sunday. This bike was recently on display at the On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter premiere in Hollywood.
As well as the door bike, other parts included:
KTM Powerparts accessories
FMF one-off custom titanium exhaust
Brembo billet race calipers
Dubya-Talon hubs, spokes and nipples
Race Tech suspension mods
Renthal handlebars, grips and sprockets
K&N air filter and breather
The machine went at auction for $US27,000 ($A33,200).
Caselli, a multi-time AMA national champion, was in a leading position on his KTM in the 2013 Baja 1000 when he suffered a crash – after a collision with an animal, according to his team -- that resulted in severe head trauma. He died of his injuries in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
Caselli's accomplishments included the 2011-2013 AMA National Hare & Hound National Championships, numerous International Six-Day Enduro (ISDE) gold medals, and an overall ISDE E3 class victory in 2007. Caselli also was a member of the world championship-winning 2006 ISDE junior team.
The Kurt Caselli Foundation focusses heavily on safety for motorcycle racers, particularly in the off-road sphere.
