Carlos Checa retires

The former 500cc GP winner and 2011 world superbike champion has predictably – despite some nibbles for 2014 – decided to call time on his career

Spaniard Carlos Checa, who has ridden 125cc, 250cc, 500cc, 800cc and 990cc grand prix machinery and then bookended his career by moving into world superbikes, has announced his retirement.

Checa, 41, made the announcement in the paddock at Jerez during the final round of the 2013 world superbike title, bringing an end to a distinguished career which saw him win two 500cc grands prix and then the 2011 WSBK title. And a lot happened in between, including a number of head-banging crashes which would have seen less tenacious riders call it quits a long time ago.

But Checa persevered, and in 2011 he became world superbike champion on a Ducati, when he won a massive 15 races during a brilliant campaign. He now has 24 WSBK wins to his credit, but 2013 has been hapless year on the new Ducati Panigale as he’s battled injuries from the opening round at Phillip Island.
