Can-Am celebrates first win of 2013

Polaris' domination of the SXS Rally Challenge finally ends as Can-Am celebrates breakthrough win

Can-Am celebrated it's first win of the season in the Side by Side Rally Challenge category at the Australian leg of the World Rally Championship in Coffs Harbour thanks to Michael Guest and co-driver David Green.

The breakthrough win for the team, piloting a 2013 Can-Am Maverick 1000 X rs, marks the first time arch-rival Cody Crocker in his Polaris RZR 900 has not won a round of the Side by Side Rally Challenge, which runs alongside selected rounds of the Australian Rally Championship.

The event kicked off on Thursday night as tens of thousands of spectators gathered in the centre of Coffs Harbour for a super special stage, combining tarmac and gravel. Guest finished second but by a cat's whisker, one tenth of a second off the pace.

While Crocker went on to extend his lead during the first two days of competition and looked likely to continue his unbeaten streak, Guest's confidence blossomed on the third and final day. He proceeded to smash Crocker out of the park, beating him by 17 seconds in the final stage to claim victory by just five seconds.

"This is a fantastic result not only for myself and [co-driver] David Green but for our whole
team.

"To have the Maverick’s first win in a combined WRC/ARC event is a sure sign for more success around the corner," said Guest.

"We tested the Maverick during the week leading up to competition and felt we’d found even more speed and a solid reliable package to tackle the event," explained Guest.

Polaris pilot and defending champion Cody Crocker was non-plussed about missing out on the win.

"Apparently sometimes you don’t win, what’s that all about, haha!" he joked.

“It is great for the SXS class of racing to have such close and competitive racing, we had heaps of fun and we are looking forward to putting the pressure back on in Victoria in November," said Crocker.

The next rally takes place in Victoria in the shire of Baw Baw in the alps on November 15 to 16, which marks the first time the SXS category has raced in the south-eastern state.
