Camping has been scrapped for the 2022 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, leaving thousands of punters scrambling for last minute accommodation on Phillip Island.
The return of MotoGP to the famous circuit overlooking Bass Strait is set to attract a huge crowd after the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021, but the decision to close camping areas is sure to create some backlash.
According to The Bass Coast News, recent rainfall is to blame, with large sections of the campground too sodden to accommodate the thousands of campers that usually attend.

The event is scheduled for October 14-16, but with the campgrounds utilising surrounding farmland and paddocks, organisers have made the early call to notify ticker holders via email that camping won’t be possible in 2022.
The Bass Coast News reported that the camping areas had initially been expanded to cope with the expected increase in attendees for the highly-anticipated event, but the High-Side South and High-Side North campgrounds haven been rendered unusable.
“A wetter than normal winter on Phillip Island has meant that certain sections of the campgrounds are the wettest they have been for decades,” event organisers said. “It means that large areas of the campgrounds will not be available for 2022.”
bikesales understands that the closures don’t affect the entire campground, with some sections still set to be available on race weekend. Organisers notified those who had allocated sites affected by the wet weather that they would not have a campsite.
Camping tickets will be refunded, but with affordable accommodation on Phillip Island hard to come by at the best of times, many ticket holders will now be without a place to stay for the event.
