Cam Donald explains fear and speed at the Isle of Man TT

What is it like to ride at 300km/h around the world’s most dangerous motor racing circuit? That’s just one of the questions two-time Isle of Man TT winner Cam Donald attempts to answer in a new interview with bikesales.

“Some of the sections of the road are so narrow, and the sensation of speed is almost overwhelming,” Cam told bikesales editor Dylan Ruddy. “You just laugh when everything’s working well. It’s such a buzz.”

The Isle of Man TT is held annually and was first run in 1907. The two-week event uses a time-trial format around the Snaefell Mountain Course – a 60km public road circuit that sees competitors reach speeds of up to 320km/h, with average speeds as high as 220km/h.

Considered one of the most dangerous motorcycle races in the world, the TT is no stranger to fatalities. However, its cultural standing — both on the Isle of Man and throughout the motorcycle world — has positioned it as one of the most important and prestigious events on the racing calendar.

More than 40,000 spectators travel to the event each year, and it remains a huge part of the Isle of Man’s culture and economy.

Hailing from Warrandyte on the fringes of Melbourne, Cam competed in eight TTs between 2005 and 2016, claiming two victories in 2008.

These days, Cam splits his time between commentating, hosting tours, concreting, and testing new models for bikesales — all while being a dedicated family man.

In the bikesales interview, Donald speaks about his arrival at the TT, the dangers of the event, what it takes to win, and how to overcome fear.
