Could national-level motorcycle racing be on its way back to Melbourne's Calder Park Raceway?
The circuit's owner, ex-car racer and tyre magnate Bob Jane, has unveiled plans for a massive upgrade to the 101ha property, and also confirmed he had signed an agreement with the state government to develop a partial funding model.
There will be new seating and major landscaping, and Jane has plans to extend the main road circuit from 2.3km to a maximum of 4km.
"We're developing out here in a big way at the minute," Jane told the Brimbank Leader newspaper. "What we're doing for the motorsport public and the general community is a very positive move for the future.
"I'm talking about re-doing our racetrack out here that will be to FIA standards and that can run all types of racing in the next 12 months."
Calder Park (which also includes a drag strip and the Thunderdome) last hosted national-level motorcycle racing more than a decade ago, and the circuit is currently not licensed by Motorcycling Australia to conduct two-wheel events.
It once hosted motorcycle racing on a regular basis, which included big-ticket events such as the Swann Series, a two-hour production bike race, and superbike events.
