The 41-year-old motorcycle shop owner from Keith in South Australia was competing in his third Dakar, having won section three and was placed as high as fourth overall.
Caldecott was a four-time Australian Safari winner and started in his first Dakar in 2004. He placed as high as sixth in that event, before being forced to retire with a broken ankle.
He returned in '05, winning two stages and placing sixth outright.
Ironically he was a late entry for this year's Dakar Rally, replacing another rider in the Repsol KTM team just two weeks before the start of the event.
Caldecott was well liked in the motorcycle world and leaves behind wife Tracey and daughter Caitlin. BikePoint extends its sympathy to the Caldecott family.
