An outlay of $US14,000 will get you aboard the newest light-weight electric off-road motorcycle to hit the global market – the Cake Kalk.
The “Cake” part refers to the Colorado-based manufacturer, while the “Kalk” sobriquet is derived from KALKsten, or limestone, which is the bedrock of the island of Gotland, Sweden. The white limestone of the island is light, and ideal for building jumps, curves, banks and rollers.
So what does the Kalk offer? A minimalist design for a start, but a clean sheet one where the company had to get the balance right between weight, performance and battery life: always a challenge for purveyors of electric fare.
It has a 15kW motor with 42Nm peak torque pushing a single pivot direct drive, weighs less than 70kg and has a range of up to 80km with a top speed of 80km/h – all supporting a “snappy and lively ride”.
Ohlins looks after the suspension, the frame is aluminium, and the bodywork’s carbon-fibre.
Of course, the influences from downhill and enduro mountain bikes are obvious, but Cake says the Kalk’s equation is balanced out by merging “expertise from the off-road motorcycling industry and electric engineering”.
