Buckle it or lose it

New ultra-tough traffic laws in Italy have caused a scandal among scooter riders in Italy, with some 200 machines being confiscated in the last month

The regulations set the extraordinary penalty for things such as riding with an unbuckled helmet, side-saddle, doing wheelies and numerous other minor transgressions which are regarded as being common over there.

Even the police are starting to complain, saying they've been threatened with physical violence when trying to enforce the rules. Making matters worse is that the scooters are not returned, but sold by the government.

The outcry has become so strong that there is now talk of softening the regulations. Apparently they were first invented as a too to capture scooter-riding handbag snatchers, but somehow the whole idea got a little out of control…
