The Brough Superior, in its day, was termed the Rolls Royce of motorcycles. Semi-custom built in England by George Brough, the bikes were guaranteed to have a top speed of at least 100mph (160km/h).
This 1939 model was auctioned on December 8 at Shannons in Melbourne with a guiding range of between $50,000 and $65,000.
The outfit was originally Australian-delivered and said to have served a police bike in Queensland.
Bidding on the 1150cc side-banger was spirited from two parties on the floor at the packed auction house, and another keen phone bidder. As our correspondent at the auction attested, the guiding range was soon a distant memory as bidding topped $100,000.
The final bid went to a collector for $111,000 and we understand that the outfit will remain in Australia.
