Broadford to host 2011 world MX opener

World championship motocross racing returning to Victorian venue after a nine-year absence

World motocross racing is on its way back to Australia, with the Victorian circuit of Broadford named on the provisional calendar to open next year's championship on the weekend of May 14-15.

While it's been common knowledge that Australia was returning to the world motocross arena, it was widely expected that the Motorcycling Australia (MA)-owned Barrabool circuit, also in Victoria, enjoyed the front-running for hosting duties.

Instead, the State Motorcycle Complex in Broadford has been given the green light, and in 11 months' time the MX1 and MX2 classes will kick off a 15-round campaign at the multi-purpose venue, situated about an hour's drive north of Melbourne.

As well as the MX1 and MX2 classes, Broadford will also host round one of the 2011 Veteran Motocross World Cup.

MA hasn't yet made an official comment about Australia's ascension back onto the world motocross stage.
