Brayton wins fourth Australian supercross title

34,000 fans pack into Melbourne's Marvel Stadium for the 2019 Monster Energy AUS-X Open

Justin Brayton claimed his fourth Australian Supercross Championship following an impressive performance at the Monster Energy AUS-X Open, the final round of the series.

The American rider finished first in the three-race final as his main rival, CDR Yamaha’s Luke Clout, stumbled. Clout entered the final round one point clear of Brayton, but encountered drama early on in the SX1 final, handing the Penrite Honda rider his fourth title.

“I’m stoked to get the win,” said Brayton. “The last few weeks have been so tough, so to get this championship means a lot.”

Rockstar Husqvanra’s Jason Anderson finished second to Brayton on the night, winning the final two races of the Main Event. The former AMA Supercross champion secured the FIM Oceania Supercross Championship, which combines results from Auckland and Melbourne.

“This title is sweet. It is rad I was able to get it done,” said Anderson. “I love coming down under and I plan on doing for some time to come.”

In the SX2 class, Honda’s Mitchell Oldenburg claimed the overall victory, but American Chris Blose finished second to take home the Championship.

“I’m so pumped,” exclaimed Blose. “The Penrite Honda team worked so hard for this. I did too. It’s a dream come true to be crowned champion.”

Racing alongside American stars Brayton and Anderson was Australian Chad Reed. The former AMA Supercross Champion announced his retirement just days prior, with 2020 set to be his last full-time season. Also starring was Australian prodigy, Jett Lawrence, in his first professional race. The Geico Honda rider turned heads with two holeshots in the SX2 class, but missed out on the overall podium after a couple of mistakes.

The AUS-X Open was held at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium for the first time, with over 34,000 fans making their way through the turnstiles. It was the largest crowd ever assembled for an Australian supercross race.
