Yamaha's Cheyne Boyd and KTM tyro Tye Simmonds have recorded identical scorecards in dominating the Open and Lites classes in round six of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship at Wanneroo.
Both riders recorded 1-1-2 results in the energy-sapping West Aussie sand, which was good enough to bank 72pts each.
Boyd, whose winning streak had reached six before it was snapped by teammate and defending champion Jay Marmont, is now firmly entrenched in second position on 323pts, well ahead of Andrew McFarlane (Yamaha, 297).
Marmont, who has led from round one, is on 343pts.
"I'm pumped, I just tried to keep on doing what I'm doing, it's obviously working and I can't say enough about the CDR Rockstar Yamaha team, they've worked so hard," said Boyd. "It's been a good run with six straight wins which unfortunately got broken today with Jay taking a win, but he's a tough rider and hat's off to him and what's he's doing at the moment.
"With the points lead and stuff even though I was bummed to miss out on the 3pts it's great to go one two with the team."
Meanwhile, Simmonds returned to form with a bang and has now moved ahead of defending Lites champion Luke George (Kawasaki), and is only 20pts behind Suzuki's Matt Moss.
"I'm stoked because I have moved into second… and it goes to show my consistency is really paying off," said Simmonds. "I think coming over to Perth early to train with Motorex KTM Racing really helped me out. And I also got to practice a lot with Matt Moss, and he always keeps me on the pace, so that all contributed to my success at Wanneroo.
"We have a pretty big break now until the next round at Lakes, so between rounds I have decided to get into a bit of recreational racing, and I'm going to enter the Hattah Desert Race for a bit of fun."
Marmont (6-2-1) was second overall at Wanneroo from McFarlane (2-3-8), local rider Michael Addison (Honda, 4-4-4) and Suzuki's Cameron Taylor (7-6-5).
It was a dismal day for multiple Australian champion Craig Anderson (Kawasaki), whose paltry 16pt haul saw him drop a place in the championship to Taylor.
Kawasaki's Cody Mackie is fourth overall, 37pts behind McFarlane and 53pts ahead of Taylor.
In the Lites, Moss qualified fastest, but he didn't have a chance to make good on that impeccable form when he crashed at Turn One in the opener, and had to fight his way back from the rear of the field.
The recovery mission got him up as far as eight, and he set the second fastest time behind Simmonds.
Race two was a cracker, with Simmonds defeating Moss by just over one second, before the tables were turned in the finale.
Moss was second overall at Wanneroo, from George (3-4-3) and Kade Mosig (KTM, 4-3-7).
In the under 19s class, which had a big attrition rate, Yamaha's Luke Styke was the overall winner.
The penultimate round will be held at The Lakes (NSW) on July 26.
