Yamaha rider Lawson Bopping has claimed his first overall win in the 2015 MX Nationals, with round five held in Coolum (Qld) on Sunday, May 31.
After kick-starting his day with the fastest lap in Superpole, Bopping went 2-2 in the day's two motos to finish on 64pts, just ahead of series leader Kirk Gibbs (KTM, 63pts) and New Zealander Ben Townley (Honda, 61pts), making his first appearance in the 2015 campaign—essentially coming out of retirement. Gibbs finished with 3-1 results, and Townley 1-3.
"This is a great feeling taking this overall and it's just great to be able to give back to Dale and the whole DPH team," said Bopping. "Today was awesome. To get the win in Superpole and holeshot the first moto was really good, and then in the second race I just did what I had to do.
"The guys are a lot of fun to race against and Townley hasn't lost anything that's for sure! 'I'm just pumped—this is a big achievement for me."
In the other classes, Caleb Ward (KTM), Nathan Crawford (Husqvarna) and Jay Wilson (Yamaha) were the top three, and Connor Tierney (Husqvarna) took home the Pirelli MXD win.
Luke Clout (Yamaha) holds a slender 5pt (286 to 281) lead over Takeshi Katsuya (Kawasaki) and Wilson in MX2, and in MXD Wilson Todd (Yamaha) has the upperhand over Tierney by 6pts.
