Boorman's R 1200 GS lost and found
The adventure TV star was recently the victim of bike theft, but his BMW was tracked down just hours later after being 'followed' on its illegal journeyThere aren’t too many BMW R 1200 GSs with such a rich CV as Charley Boorman’s. But he’s lucky – or perhaps shrewd – to still be the owner of it after it was recently stolen from his abode in London.
That’s because the bike – partly dismantled -- was recovered just hours after it was pinched, traced to an exact location by an anti-theft system called Bike Trac.
Bike Trac is a small GPS, GPRS, GSM and RF device that once fitted to your bike, lets you see where it is through an internet portal. Then if your bike moves and you’re not on it, you will get an alert by SMS text message and email to let you know it’s on the move and where it’s going.
The system on Charley's bike was triggered at 4.29am on a Saturday morning and quickly tracked to a location in south-west London. The unit then showed further movement, resulting in the GS being tracked to a new location in Watford, where it was recovered.
"Naturally I was pretty shocked to learn that my bike had been stolen,” said Charley. “In normal circumstances the chance of ever seeing a bike again after it's been stolen is very slim. But with the knowledge that it had a Bike Trac unit fitted, I was fairly hopeful. To get the bike recovered so soon really is a testament to the system indeed."
