BMW chose Italy’s EICMA motorcycle show to unveil its avant-garde Concept C – a concept maxi scooter that heralds the German marque’s first exploration of the niche, and its first revisitation of the scooter segment since the emergence of its semi-enclosed C1 around a decade ago.
Just how much of the technology employed in the Concept C actually makes it through to a production model remains to be seen – concept bikes and scooters are often as much a corporate gauge for consumer interest as much as they are a window on the future – but at Milan the Concept C's high-spec components and aggressive lines attracted plenty of interest.
Powered by a larger twin-cylinder engine of undisclosed specifications, the Concept C sports an inverted front fork with twin radial-mount disc brakes, plus a rear monolever driveshaft with exposed monoshock. There’s clearly and emphasis on sporting performance, complemented by the comfort and storage capacity for which maxi scoots are renowned.
The eye-catching styling is a clear departure from traditional maxi scooter fare, but it is unmistakably BMW, with twin nose fins reminiscent of the marque’s S 1000 RR sportsbike, and numerous other touches that echo a number of other current BMW models.
BMW Motorrad says it will be producing two different scooter models that will appeal to a broad spectrum of customers, while it’s also currently exploring the possibility of an electric scoot. BMW also says the scooters will be produced in its Berlin manufacturing facility, but as yet it has made no mention of when we’re likely to see any resulting production models. Watch this space…
