BMW has unveiled the new and improved R 12 nineT roadster alongside an all-new R 12 cruiser. The pair share the same R 12 platform, however the cruiser takes inspiration from its bigger R 18 relative.
The new R 12 pair is set to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2024. The R 12 crusier will start with a price tag of $20,210 (plus on-road costs), while the R 12 nineT roadster will start from $23,990 (plus on-road costs).
Both bikes are powered by BMW’s iconic 1170cc air/oil-cooled Boxer twin engine and feature a new frame design and new technology.
Continuing the same theme as the original R nineT – which was released in 2013 – the new R 12 platform is boosted by a new one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe with a bolted-on rear frame. According to BMW this helps reduce weight and simplifies the structure and appearance of the chassis.
Also new for the platform are round analogue gauges for speed and RPM (a tachometer is optional for the R 12 cruiser), however a digital TFT display can be purchased as an ex-works option.
Both bikes also feature ride modes (Rain, Road, Dynamic for the R12 nineT and Rock and Roll for the R 12), while ABS Pro, dynamic traction control and drag torque control are all standard. The bikes also have USB-C and 12 V sockets, keyless ignition, and LED lighting as standard.
The engine itself benefits from a new airbox, which is integrated under the seat. The motor produces 80kW and 115Nm in R 12 nineT guise, while the R 12 crusier offers 70kW and 110Nm.
Suspension is handled by upside down telescopic forks at the front and a Paralever swinging arm with rear spring strut at the back. The fork on the R 12 nineT is fully adjustable.
The braking system comprises of radially mounted 4-piston monobloc brake callipers, steel flex brake lines and floating 310mm discs.
BMW will offer three paint schemes per model, while there is also a wide array of optional extras and features available for each bike.
