REVIEW

BMW R1150GS

It's up for debate, but BMW more or less invented the increasingly popular adventure tourer class of motorcycle. There have been some stumbles along the way, but they got really good from the old air-cooled R100GS paralever series and have mostly improve

The R1100GS was spectacularly good, and the 1150 simply adds slicker styling and slightly more user-friendly midrange grunt.

Injection of the twin is about perfect, while there's a good spread of power, well-sorted suspension and acceptable brakes.

In stock trim you get a motorcycle with surprisingly good sporting ability - not sharp, but hard to beat on rough tar - with good comfort and the ability to tackle most made dirt roads with ease. The latter takes an act of faith, as losing the plot on something this big and heavy doesn't bear thinking about.

If racking up long miles and taking the left turn to Lower Yunta on the spur of the moment is your gig, this is the perfect device. But never mistake it for a dirt bike.
