BMW R nineT Scrambler touches down

BMW Motorrad's Heritage line-up expands with the arrival of the R nineT Scrambler…
Fans of the scrambler motorcycle genre of the 1950s, '60s and '70s now have another retro model to customise to their hearts' content, with BMW's R nineT Scrambler now on sale in Australia.
A sibling for BMW's original 'Heritage' café racer model, the R nineT, the Scrambler features higher handlebars, a more relaxed and upright ride position, and a set of high-swept, vertically stacked exhausts.
The seat height is higher than that of the original R nineT at 820mm – that's 35mm taller.
The three-piece tubular-steel space frame utilises the engine as a stressed member and features a detachable pillion section, while the BMW Motorrad accessories catalogue is already bursting with parts to allow owners to create their own unique look.
Underlining its light off-road potential, the R nineT Scrambler comes with a 19-inch front wheel. In standard trim the bike features cast alloy rims and road tyres, but cross-spoked rims and off-road tyres are available as options.
The bike rolls on a non-adjustable 43mm telescopic fork complete with period fork gaiters, with 125mm of wheel travel. At the rear BMW's Paralever setup delivers 140mm of travel and is adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping.
Powering the 220kg (wet) show is BMW's 1170cc, air/oil-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve boxer flat-twin engine, good for a claimed 110hp at 7750rpm and 116Nm at 6000rpm. The engine has been remapped to help the bike meet strict EU4 emissions standards.
The Scrambler won't be any slouch when it comes to stopping, either – it's fitted with a four-piston, twin-disc setup up front with a twin-piston stopper at the rear, all backed by ABS as standard.
Other standard inclusions for the Australian market include heated grips and a chromed exhaust.
The Australian press launch for the R nineT Scrambler will kick off tomorrow (September 27) on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Bikesales.com.au will be there, so stay tuned for a full report.
The R nineT Scrambler is priced at $19,150 plus on-roads. Also on offer in this niche is Triumph's Scrambler ($14,390 plus on-roads), Ducati's Scrambler Classic ($15,490 plus on-roads) and Moto Guzzi's V7 II Stornello ($17,800 ride away). The original BMW R nineT is priced at $21,990 plus on-roads.
Alternatively, you could always win yourself a R nineT Scrambler – one example is being raffled by national suicide prevention charity, Black Dog Ride. Click here for further details, but don't muck about – ticket sales close on November 7.
