As the Australasian Safari, or the 'Dakar Down Under' as it's sometimes called, rolls on, taking its toll on the riders and drivers of the Western Australian event, one of the original motorcycles to stamp its authority over desert racing has been given a tribute by a local dealer.
Launched in 1980, the BMW R 80 G/S would later prove its reliability in the Paris-Dakar Rally, arguably the world's most gruelling desert event, when it was raced to victory back-to-back by Belgian rider Gaston Rahier.
After Hubert Auriol won in 1981 and 1983, Rahier rode the BMW to victory in 1984 and 1985, and now Brisbane-based BMW Motorrad dealership Motorline Motorrad has created a fitting tribute to the Paris-Dakar winning bike.
Based on a BMW F 800 GS, the custom desert racer "...is a stunning tribute that takes the1980s livery into the present era and creates a lasting tribute to Gaston Rahier," says BMW Motorrad.
First seen at the recent 2011 BMW GS Safari, which was tragically cut short after a fatality this year, the Motorline Motorrad replica generated a lot of interest amongst competitors.
