BWM has paid homage to the original R 80 G/S adventure bike with a new model that is set to launch in Australia later this year.
The new BMW R 12 G/S is powered by an air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine and will arrive Down Under with a starting price tag of $23,990 before on-road costs.
Following from the R 12 and R 12 nineT models, which were the successors of the R nineT platform, the new R 12 G/S features what BMW calls a “classic enduro design” with “ideal ergonomics for ambitious off-road riding”. It effectively replaces the R nineT Urban G/S.

In keeping with the “enduro” theme, the R 12 G/S comes equipped with a 21- and 17-inch wheel combo with the option for an 18-inch rear wheel. There is also fully-adjustable suspension front and rear with 210mm and 200mm of travel respectively, as well as switchable traction control and a bolted-on rear subframe that compliments the one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe.
The R 12 G/S will come with three ride modes as standard, with the option for an Enduro Pro mode, as well as quickshift, cornering ABS, keyless ignition, and more. The bike also has an analogue dash as standard, but there is an option for a digital display.
In addition to the base variant, BMW will also offer an “Enduro” variant for $27,990 plus on-road costs. As well as the aforementioned 18-inch rear wheel and Enduro Pro ride mode, this variant will come with dual sport tyres, extra protection, a digital display, heated grips, cruise control, and tyre pressure monitoring.
Other options include a passenger kit ($315), a rally-style bench seat ($350), an anti-theft alarm ($395), and an Option 719 style kit ($2000).
BMW Motorrad Australia says that first customer deliveries are expected in the middle of the year.
