BMW Motorrad has opened its first wholly BMW Group-owned motorcycle production plant to be located outside of Germany, with the Manaus plant in Brazil now producing nine different BMW models.
BMW has invested around Euro 10.5 million (approximately A$15 million) in the plant, which will have an initial production capacity of 10,000 motorcycles per year.
The first bike to roll off the production line was an F 700 GS, but the plant will also produce the F 800 GS, F 800 GS Adventure, F 800 R, R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, S 1000 R, S 1000 RR, and S 1000 XR.
Over 175 employees now work at the site, which is also supported by 45 local suppliers. BMW says those numbers may increase depending on demand.
“BMW Motorrad is expanding its motorcycle production globally to achieve sustainable business growth,” said Stephan Schaller, President of BMW Motorrad.
“Brazil remains an important market for this strategy and we see great potential in this country over the mid and long term. This is why we have decided to construct our first 100 per cent BMW Group-owned motorcycle plant outside of Germany in Manaus.”
The plant was constructed in nine months and takes up an area of 10,000 square metres.
BMW says it has the latest equipment and highly trained employees, able to reproduce the same level of quality found in vehicles produced in other BMW plants.
