BMW Motorrad's 'Safety 360' principle, first launched three years ago, has a number of critical elements underpinning it, technology being one of them. To that end, the company has just unveiled a dynamic brake light, which it has borrowed from its automobile division to fit on six models in 2016.
The light operates in a two-stage process. Stage one is activated when the motorcycle decelerates from speeds above 50km/h. In this case the brake light flashes with a frequency of 5 Hz. As the motorcycle approaches standstill (< 14 km/h), the hazard warning flashers are also turned on. These remain engaged until the motorcycle accelerates again to a minimum speed of 20km/h.
The dynamic brake light is available as an option ex-works in conjunction with ABS Pro for the R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure and S 1000 RX. The K 1600 GT, K 1600 GTL and K1600 GTL Exclusive luxury tourers score the dynamic brake light as standard.
Compared to conventional ABS, ABS Pro goes a step further offering increased safety by offering banking-sensitive anti-lock braking. ABS Pro prevents the wheels from locking even when the brakes are applied quickly, reducing abrupt changes in steering force and stopping the motorcycle from rearing up unintentionally.
The dynamic brake light is for Euro-spec models at the moment, and there's no word on when other markets will get the technology.
