BMW envisions an electric boxer

Vision DC Roadster concept an electric homage to the iconic air-cooled engine

BMW Motorrad has launched a concept to showcase the next generation of its boxer-engined design.

Except it doesn’t. In place of an engine, the Vision DC Roadster packs a vertically mounted battery pack flanked by a pair of cooling modules that stick out to emulate the traditional steeled-ribbed air ventilation of the boxer layout.

The electric motor sits below the battery and connects directly to the universal shaft.

A tubular frame sits where a conventional fuel tank would be mounted and extends down into the seat. The front “hump” gives the rider something to brace against.

BMW Motorrad head of design, Edgar Heinrich, says the boxer engine remains a stalwart of the company’s character.

“But BMW Motorrad stands for visionary zero-emissions vehicle concepts, too. In view of this, one question that arises is: what would happen if we were to replace the boxer engine with an electric motor and the required battery?

“The Vision Bike shows how we’re able to retain the identity and iconic appearance of BMW Motorrad in distinctive form while at the same time presenting an exciting new type of riding pleasure,” Heinrich says.

“After all: anyone who’s ever tried it out in practice knows very well that riding on two wheels is just as exciting when its electrically powered!

The custom-made Metzeler tyres include five fluorescent panels, each about the size of a postage stamp, integrated into the sidewall.

BMW Motorrad says they combine “innovative design with safety aspects: standing and moving, the lighting elements create an exciting graphic effect. In darkness, they increase the visibility from the side and thus providing more security. They also convey dynamics when in motion”.

Because it’s a concept, BMW Motorrad hasn’t released any details of the battery, engine or weight.
