BMW gets the royal call-up

Did you notice the bikes which led the procession of the royal wedding to Westminster Abbey? They certainly weren't British…

It’s fair to say last Friday’s royal wedding enjoyed a quintessential British theme, but one highly visible component broke the mould  – the vehicles which led the procession through the streets of London to Westminster Abbey.

The millions of viewers didn’t see Rolls Royces, Jaguars, Aston Martins or Triumphs, but instead a fleet of BMWs – mostly R 1150 RS – leading the way.

Yep, that’s right, the London police opted for the BMWs (no sign of the all-new K 1600 GT though), and the second option would probably have been Honda’s ST1300, which the constabulary also has in its enforcement armoury.

And a third option – sorry Triumph – may have been Prince William’s Ducati 1198S, which he was spotted cruising about London on – complete with a anonymity-inducing tinted visor on his Arai helmet -- just days before his wedding, no doubt as a stress reliever.

The R 1150 RS was sold new in Australia between 2001-2004.
