According to a recent news report on the website of America's Wall Street Journal newspaper, BMW Motorrad is currently in talks with India's TVS Motors to ink a technological alliance. BMW Motorrad's General Director, Hendrik von Kuenheim, went on record earlier this year and revealed the German maker was looking to partner with existing manufacturers in key emerging markets, and TVS Motors certainly fits the bill -- it's reputed to be India's fourth-largest producer of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds.
"We will share more details on the nature of the talks in due course," the Chairman of TVS, Venu Srinivasan (pictured), told the Wall Street Journal.
While TVS was recently edged out of third position in the Indian market by Honda, the national domestic motorcycle industry is thriving -- according to the report, sales of bikes of over 125cc increased by 17 per cent over the last financial year, with a staggering total of just under 3,000,000 vehicles sold. The Indian motorcycle market in general grew by some 12 per cent in the same period.
If indeed TVS does seal an agreement with BMW Motorrad for the latter to help develop its products and undoubtedly move towards larger-capacity bikes, the report points out it will be following the path of other major Indian-powered, two-wheeler heavyweights, Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto, which have both secured tie-ups with Western manufacturers. Market-leader Hero has inked a deal with America's Erik Buell Racing for the latter to supply it with engines, while second-placed Bajaj Auto owns a major stake (now 47 per cent) in Austrian firm KTM.
