This year's EICMA motorcycle show in Milan is shaping as a big one for the Rimini-based Bimota, with the latest interpretation of its hub-steered motorcycle, the Tesi, to take centre stage at its exhibition.
The Tesi 3D RaceCafe extends the design of the Tesi 3D with a café racer pose, as the company moves away from its well-trodden sports bike path — the latest creation in that segment the BMW Motorrad-powered BB3, which has been less than successful (more on that later).
The Tesi 3D RaceCafe uses Ducati's air-cooled 803cc engine, the same one that is powering the current Ducati Scrambler range, and the ride height is adjusted using two eccentrics where the front and rear suspensions are joined to the chassis. The front end can be adjusted through a range of 9.5mm and the rear has a range of 14mm. If both adjustments are made in the same direction, the Tesi 3D RC can be raised or lowered by 23mm.
Meantime another machine on the Bimota stand in Milan will be the Impeto 'hypernaked', a streetfighter powered by the twin spark-plugged Ducati Testastretta engine found in the latest Diavel power cruiser. There's also a ride by wire throttle, traction control and anti-lock braking — and for the real hedonists Bimota is now offering a supercharger which will increase power and torque in the region of 15-20 percent. For track use, only….
Bimota doesn't say whether the Impeto will replace the existing DB9 naked, but we should know more next week.
Bimota is also showcasing a 'BB3 kit' in Milan, targeting customers "who are re-discovering the early beginnings of Bimota". The 'build your own Bimota from a kit' was a distinctive feature of Bimota for many years, and the latest attempt will see the BB3 kit contain a complete rolling chassis with all the necessary parts to build a fully functional motorcycle except for the engine and electric/electronic systems of the BMW Motorrad S 1000 RR engine. The BB3 will come either as a “racing/track bike” or a “street bike” – both versions featuring the latest evolution of Bimota’s racing technology.
Bimota's EICMA press conference will take place on Tuesday, November 17.
