Team Bikesales will be competing in the 2015 Le Minz 24-hour scooterthon in Queensland on November 6-7, as we pull our Aprilia SR 50 R out of hibernation for another attempt on the epic fundraiser.
After 1440 minutes of often wet action in 2014, Team Bikesales finished in a respectable 29th position, only 109 laps down on the winner… but we're eager to move into the top 10 this year. That's required a few personnel changes when the opposition is likely to include riders in the ilk of Josh Hook, Glenn Allerton, Gareth Jones, Mike Jones, Jason Crump and Garry McCoy.
To that end, we're delighted to announce that former Aussie superbike and world endurance champion Steve Martin (a regular contributor on Bikesales) will be joining us on Team Bikesales, as well as Alex Phillis — son of Aussie legend Rob Phillis and also this author's nephew. I changed Al's nappy when he was little, so he owes me…
As for Martin, he's devoured 24-hour world endurance races on a fire-breathing 180hp Yamaha YZF-R1, so the spectre of a 3.7hp, 4.2Nm 50cc two-stroke scooter shouldn't hold too many fears.
Martin and Phillis will be joined by a couple of Joe Averages in the form of Carsales managing editor (but former road racer) Marton Pettendy and yours truly, both backing up from the 2014 campaign.
Thanks to Bikes Only transport (here), our SR 50 R arrived safely from Bikesales' Melbourne HQ to Queensland, where Pettendy has prepped the machine (well, check fluid levels and tyres pressures) before the heat of battle.
The scooters must all be standard (apart from the removal of all factory restrictors), and all are speed checked before the start. If you cheat, you won't even be fronting the starter.
The 2015 Le Minz 24-hour scooterthon starts at midday on Friday, November 6 at Xtreme Karting, 540 Pimpama-Jacobs Well Rd, Pimpama, Qld. The complex is only minutes from Dream World. Spectators are welcome at the event. Come along and say hello.
